Pedraza

This is a fairytale town - but so real

When you come to this city for the first time, you get the impression that this is a museum exponent and not a place where people live. The town is fortified; there are about 500 inhabitants who live and work within the walls of Pedraza. This city has stayed unchanged for decades. In Pedraza, everything is the same as it was in the past; the walls still surround the city, the towers still stand proudly and above all, the city is intersected by cobbled streets.Pedraza is mostly made of stone and the atmosphere in the town is pretty much historical.   This medieval town is a part of the province of Segovia, which belongs to the autonomous community of Castile and Leon.

People of this town are highly aware of its value

If you want to visit Pedraza, you have to make a one hour drive from the capital of Spain but you will not be allowed to enter the town with your car. Residents who live in Pedraza keep their town protected because they are aware of its value. In Pedraza, one is not allowed to do anything that would lead to the damage of the medieval monuments. However, this city is much older than its medieval remains. Judging by some paintings which were found in the surroundings of Pedraza, there was a Celtic settlement in the 4th century B.C. After Celts, the town was under the Romans. In the middle Ages, some noble families lived here and their homes still stand in Pedraza.Nowadays, Pedraza has fewer inhabitants than was the case in the 19th century. This happened because more and more people went to live in the cities. However, those who are still staying in Pedraza are truly trying to save their town. Thanks to their donations, the town was renovated in the late nineties.

A small town full of romance, holiday spirit and joy

Protector of the city is the Saint Virgen del Carrasco and each year there is a festival held in his honor. On the thirtieth of April and the first of May another festival is held in the town - the festival of San Jose Obrero in La Velilla. And in July, concerts are held every weekend. During these concerts, popularly called candlelight concerts, the whole Pedraza is lit by candles.A town worth visiting, Pedraza has much to offer!

Oviedo

History

It was in 761 when two monks founded this city - Oviedo. Situated in northern Spain, this small settlement with a local church dedicated to Saint Vincent grew over centuries into a large city. Today, Oviedo is the capital city of the Province named Asturias with a population of over 200 000 inhabitants. But what happened in the mid time? In the mid time, the domestic rulers did a lot of work. As a result of their effort, today we can see many magnificent buildings such as San Vicente de Oviedo - church and monastery founded in the 8th century, the church of St Mary at Mount Naranco built in 9th century, the Holy chamber of Oviedo - church from the same period (under the protection of UNESCO World Heritage Site), the University of Oviedo established in the 15th century, El Fontán Market - monumental complex from the 17th century, etc.

Things to do in Oviedo

Every visitor that comes to Oviedo should visit the city center with plenty of cathedrals. To see important monuments of Santa Maria del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, visitors can take a taxi or the bus No 10 from near the train station. When you get tired and hungry, take a little break in some of the pleasant restaurants in Bulevar de Sidra and enjoy the domestic meals and good wine. For rest, take some of the comfortable rooms in nearby hotels such as Hotel Carbayón, Celuisma Las Lomas, La Gruta and several others situated 2-3 minutes from the city center and with a lovely view.

Fiestas and Sports Events

In Oviedo, visitors can participate in several festivities such as Twelve Night parade that goes through main streets and ends by making offerings to Jesus Christ in the Cathedral Square. During the carnival called L'Antroxu, people wear masks and costumes and participate in the street parade. During the festivities called El Desarme, people celebrate victory of the locals in the First Carlist War in 1830s. If you like to try out domestic meals, you can do that during the the Feast of San Mateo and check if the successors of Mateo cook well enough.Oviedo has a football team called Real Oviedo, roller hockey team called Esfer Oviedo and basketball team - Domo Residencial Oviedo. For those who like to follow sports events of every kind, great events to visit are Horse Show, Outdoor Sports Climbing, Tour of Asturias in cycling, City of Oviedo Mountain Bike Open,  Hockey International Tournament, National Auto-Cross Championship, International Chess Open, Boxing Nights and many others.

Morella

Morella is a town of glory, victory and history

The town is a part of the Valencian community and it belongs to the province of Castellon. Morella was located in a region Maestrazgo that no longer exists. It has about 3,000 inhabitants and it lies in the plains of the Ebro River, 1072 m above sea level. This is a historic town that suffered many misfortunes and disasters during the Moor occupation, the Spanish civil war and plague. This is an ancient town where Romans, Arabs, Iberians and Christians once lived. The whole town was a fortress and it was surrounded by walls. Originally, the castle was built by the Spaniards during the Moor occupation. As it often was under a flood of enemies, the fortress was destroyed many times and built all over again. Present-day ruins of the fortification are from different periods of time.

Turbulent development of the town testifies about its beauty

The first traces of life in this area date from the prehistoric era. In the surroundings, there are many cave paintings as proof. During the Punic War, this area was at the heart of the conflict between the Carthaginians and the Roman Empire. The Arabs won the town in 714 and they renamed it Maurela.

Black days of the town Morella

The plague destroyed almost the whole population of Morella in the late 17th century. Legend says that the plague reigned for almost 20 years in Morella and then, one day, a statue of the Virgin entered the town and it destroyed the plague forever. Sexenni festival is held in the memory of that event. It happens every 6 years and it lasts for nine days. During the festival, a statue of the Virgin is carried through the city, just as in the 17th century, while locals perform their traditional dance. Next Sexenni festival will be held in 2012.

A place to relax and have a great time

Morella is the administrative center of Els Ports. Besides it being a tourist place, its economy consists mainly of agriculture goods, wool and woolen products. The town is very interesting, especially because it lies on the hill. At the top of the hill, there is the Moor castle and the entire hill is surrounded by the remains of the walls. Morella is a tourist center and has many restaurants, cafes, night bars, historical monuments, museums, galleries, festivals, cultural and music events which you can enjoy.

Rias Baixas

Rias Baixas faces the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Costa del Marisco. Rias Baixas is a Spanish province known for its grapes, used to make excellent white wine. Rias Baixas is very famous for its Spanish wine selection, including the following famous wines:

Albariño de Fefinanes
Brandal Albariño
Condes de Albarei Albariño
Don Olegario Albariño
Mar de Frades Albariño
Paco and Lola Albariño
Pazo de Senorans Albariño
Pazo de Sanorans Seleccion de Anada
Salneval Albariño
Serra da Estrela
Torre la Moreira Albariño
Valminor Albariño

Rias Baixas is not only famous for its vast wine selection; it is also famous for its climate which is Atlantic, with wet winters and mild summers. The rainfall in this area is generally high while the temperatures are mild with the average being 55 degrees F; this climate makes it easy for grapes to grow with over 2,200 hours of sunlight during the growing season. While the grapes are growing nice and ripe on the vines, it gives you plenty of time to go around on a tour where you can enjoy a great time at the beach, taste wines and even have a chance to make your own wine. There is also a national park in Rias Baixas, Cies  Islands which is part of Galicia National Park. It is a great place to see wildlife in action. Along with many other things to do in Rias Baixas, you could go fishing at one of the great fishing ports in Rias Baixas - Ribeira and Bueu. The beaches are also great places to visit in Rias

Baixas because they are extremely safe with lifeguards on duty most of the day.Overall Rias Baixas is a great place to be along with the rest of the Galician coast, being a great place to “have a good time and let loose” while being able to embrace the history of these magnificent places including their great beaches, restaurants, resorts and wine. With regard to the beauty of Rias Baixas, it is one of the most beautiful places you can visit in the world; walking around seeing grapes everywhere, having a view of the ocean around that seems like it will never end and a picturesque view from your bedside, it is almost unbelievable. However you may never be able to believe what I am talking about until you have actually seen it with your own eyes, so make your next vacation to Rias Baixas or any of the Galician coasts.

Places of tourist interest in Cuenca, Spain

The city of Cuenca in Spain is a paradise for those tourists who wish to visit places of historical importance. Some of the places of interest for tourists are briefly introduced here:

St. Paul Bridge:

This Bridge is constructed over the Huecar's Gorge. According to history it was constructed in the year 1533. People were finding it difficult to visit Saint Paul Convent which was on the other side of the bridge. To enable people to attend the Convent, the bridge was constructed by Jaun Del Pozo. Actually the original bridge collapsed and a new one was constructed in the beginning of the 20th century. The new bridge has been constructed on the remains of the old bridge. This bridge which is located at a height of about 60 meters has been constructed using steel and wood.

The Town hall:

Some people would say what is so special in a Town Hall? The Town Hall building in Cuenca has a history behind it. It was constructed in the year 1762 in typical Baroque style by King Charles III. This is the most beautiful building in the vicinity. The three Roman Arches which support this building are unique in their look and aesthetic beauty. The Central Arch of the building is so beautiful that it has enhanced the beauty of the building.

Hanging Houses:

Can a house hang? In fact history says that hanging houses were common in Cuenca. These houses were built on a rock. Such houses were plenty all along the Huecar River Gorge. According to historians these houses were constructed in the 15th century. Now only two hanging houses are remaining. Out of the two houses, one is converted into a hotel and the other one into a museum. This museum has a collection of innumerable photos which are taken from the bridge of San Pablo.

Monument:

Located on the top of a hill where one can have a spectacular look of the places around is a monument devoted to Holy Heart of Jesus. Materials relevant to the monument were transported to the top of the hill through donkeys. The hill can be climbed by foot or even by car.

Provincial council:

This building has been constructed in the 20th century and it is one of the most beautiful buildings of Cuenca. The building is so elegant that it attracts the attention of most of the visitors.

These spires comprise of stonework throughout the entire cathedral. In the middle section, there are pictures which speak about the martyrdom of the saints. The interior of the cathedral is beautifully decorated with works of art and artifacts. The cathedral bears typical Gothic design. Sacristy’s exterior has beautiful sculpture works and most beautiful figures of angels, armored knights, etc. The interior of the cathedral is luxuriously carved and it bears the paintings of many angels. Places of interest in Spain – Cuenca

This city of Cuenca which is located in Central Spain is one of the largest provinces covering an area of about 17000 sq kms. Like other provinces, even Cuenca was under the rule of Romans and Moors and later Christians took over the city. The Moors recognized its strategic location and they started to protect the city by building forts. Cuenca is rich in heritage buildings and is also known for its beautiful environment and natural beauty. We start our tour of Cuenca by visiting ‘Our lady of Grace Cathedral’.This cathedral is believed to have been built during the period 1182 to 1270. The façade of the building was rebuilt in 1902. Historians believe that this is the first Gothic style cathedral in this region. The cathedral has undergone changes that were carried out by successive civilizations. There is a sign of ‘Unum ex septem’ in this cathedral. People have the faith that those who pray looking at this sign of ‘Unum ex septem’ would get forgiveness from sins for five years.

Church of Saint Peter:

This church is believed to have been built by one Jose Martin in the 18th century. It is located at a place called Plaza del Trabuco. The façade of the church is beautifully designed. The entire church is designed in octagonal shape from the outside while inside it is circular in shape.

Bishop’s Palace:

This is our next place of visit. The palace is beautifully designed. The palace has a museum where rare works of art are on display. It is said that some of the art works were lost in the Spanish war of independence. Some of the most beautiful works of handicraft made on carpet are on display in this palace.

Seminary:

Built in the year 1745, it has a rectangular building. The seminary is popular for its baroque façade. This is one of the Seminaries which have collection of numerous religious books dating back to the year 1501. There is a meeting room which is built in typical Gothic architecture. Normally visitors are not allowed inside the meeting room.  Every year more than 15 priests are trained in this Seminary. Managana Tower: At the outset, there are no historical records to verify when this tower was built. However, going by the available information, historians believe that the tower was built earlier to the year 1565. Visitors should not miss this Managana Tower because of its architectural beauty. It is also the most ideal viewpoint to have a glimpse of the places around Cuenca.
